Southern Maine Earns Split at St. Joseph's Tri-Match

STANDISH, Maine  –  Freshman Amanda Keppel (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy) had nine kills, seven service aces and 17 digs to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners as the Huskies split a pair of volleyball matches at the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Tri-Match Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Center in Standish, Maine.

Southern Maine defeated the Mariners 3-1 (25-16, 25-19, 21-25 and 25-23) in its season-opener and then fell to the St. Joseph's College Monks 3-0 (24-26, 14-25 and 18-25) to stand at 1-1.  St. Joseph's defeated MMA 3-0 to start its season at 2-0, while the Mariners fall to 0-2 early in 2013.

Along with Keppel, freshman Kristina Rubico (Chelmsford, Mass.) also had a strong collegiate debut with seven kills, two service aces and nine digs.  Freshman Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) directed the USM attack with 10 assists.  Sophomore Kelsey Abramson (Deerfield, Mass./Frontier Regional) added three kills, five aces, five digs and a solo block.

In the second game, the Monks were led by Felicia Wachowiak's 11 kills on 21 attempts (.429 kill percentage) for the 3-0 win.  Rubico turned in another strong performance with six kills, while Keppel had three kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Demi Ruder (Clifton, Col./Central) added 10 kills. 

Southern Maine hosts Daniel Webster College on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.) in its season-opening match.  St. Joseph's College (Maine) hosts Bates and Husson in the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Invitational on Friday (6:00 p.m.).
