UMass Boston Defeats Southern Maine 69-55

BOSTON  –  Sophomore guard Vinny DeLucia (Miami, Fla./Sagemont Upper School) scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures as the UMass Boston Beacons upended the University of Southern Maine Huskies 69-55 in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Tuesday evening at the Clark Athletic Center in Boston.

         With the win, UMass Boston halts a four-game losing streak and improves to 10-11 overall and 4-7 in the Little East.  With its second consecutive loss, USM falls to 13-9 overall and 7-4 in the conference.

         DeLucia was 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-5 from three-point range to earn game-high scoring honors.  He added a game-high five assists.  Freshman guard Jahleel Moise (Brockton, Mass.) and junior forward Rahshjeem Benson (Boston, Mass./Dorchester) each scored 14 points, while Benson had a game-high 24 rebounds to help the Beacons to a 49-38 edge on the boards.  Sophomore forward Brian Clarke (Miramar, Fla./Everglades) had 11 points and 14 rebounds.

         Junior guards Brandon Tomah (Princeton, Maine/Calais) and Conor Sullivan (Scarborough, Maine) each scored 13 points to lead USM.  Senior guard Mike Poulin (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) and freshman guard Cole Libby (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each tossed in seven points.

         Holding a slim 26-24 lead at the break, UMass Boston used a 18-4 run in the opening minutes of the second half to grab a 44-28 lead with 13:32 to play. Benson scored eight of his 14 points in the run, which was punctuated by a three from DeLucia.  The Beacons remained in control of the game and took its largest lead, 51-30, following an offensive rebound and two free throws from Benson with 11:02 to play.

         Southern Maine trimmed to lead to 12 points, 54-42, with a 12-3 run over a three and a half minute span led by six points from Sullivan, but it was as close as the Huskies would get the rest of the way as the Beacons held on for the win.

Southern Maine travels to Rhode Island College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).  UMass Boston hosts Plymouth State on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
