Bubier Goal in OT Gives USM 3-2 Win over UMass Boston

Box Score

BOSTON – Senior Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) scored at 2:02 of overtime to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 3-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons in an ECAC Women's East game Friday at the Clark Athletic Center.

The win extends the Huskies unbeaten string to a season-high four games (3-0-1), and gives them a split of the teams' regular-season series.  The Huskies improved their record to 7-11-6 overall and 6-7-4 in league play.  The Beacons, winless in their last four games (0-3-1), slip to 8-12-4 overall and 5-8-4 in ECAC games.

Playing in her 100th career game for the Huskies, Bubier picked up her first game-winning goal of the season when she found a loose puck in front of UMB sophomore goaltender Kailyn Burke (Franklin, Mass.) and put a shot past her for an unassisted goal.  The goal was the second of the game for Bubier and her team-leading eighth of the season.

Despite being out shot 28-6 in the game, the Huskies made the most of their offensive chances.  Bubier gave USM a 1-0 lead early in the second period potting her seventh goal of the season off an assist from junior Shannon Cronin (Wakefield, Mass.).

The Huskies' lead held up for 14 minutes until junior Sarahanne Cavolo (Roxbury, N.H.) scored a short-handed goal at 16:31.  Junior Katie Loiselle (Glocester, R.I.) picked up the lone assist on the play after forcing a turnover in the Huskies' end and passing the puck to Cavolo.

USM regained the advantage at 8:07 of the third period when junior Erin Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.) tallied a power-play goal by knocking in a loose puck from in front of the net.  Classmate Brittany Soar (Boxborough, Mass.) and sophomore Talya Bent (Cranston, R.I.) were credited with the assists.  The goal was the seventh of the season for Banfield.

With time winding down, the Beacons pulled Burke for the extra attacker with 1:45 to play, and freshman Samantha Fallon (Pembroke, Mass.) made it pay off scoring the tying goal with 25 seconds remaining in regulation.  Senior Emily LaRosa (Weymouth, Mass.) picked up the lone assist.

USM sophomore goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) posted 26 saves to earn her sixth win of the season.  Bergstrom had nine saves in the opening period, including five during a three-minute stretch when the Beacons enjoyed the power play.  Burke finished with three saves.

Southern Maine concludes the 2012-13 regular season Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at Saint Anselm College.  UMass Boston hosts Plymouth State University in its regular season finale Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
