Southern Maine, Castleton State Play to 1-1 Tie on Senior Day

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) stopped 22 shots to backstop the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-1 overtime tie against the visiting Castleton State College Spartans in an ECAC Women's East game Sunday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.  The game was rescheduled to Sunday after due to the blizzard that struck the New England region Friday and Saturday.

The draw was the second of the season for the two teams who played to an identical score at Castleton in November.  Southern Maine, with its school record sixth tie of the season, is now 5-11-6 overall and 4-7-4 in league play.  Castleton stays level at 9-9-4 overall and 6-5-4 in ECAC play.

Bergstrom and Castleton sophomore Paula Stephens (Seattle, Wash.) matched each other save for save over the final period and the five-minute overtime session to keep the score tied.  Stephens made 27 saves, including four in the overtime period.

Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead just after its power play expired as sophomore Julia Pearl (Essex Jct., Vt.) tipped home a shot taken by senior Alex Smith (Winthrop, Mass.) from the right point.  The goal was the fifth of the season for Pearl.  Senior Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) also earned an assist on the play.

Freshman Rachel Bombardier (Pittsford, Vt.) tallied the equalizer late in the second period netting a power-play goal.  Bombardier, camped at the right post, took a pass from sophomore Brianna Narodowy (North Smithfield, R.I.) and slipped a shot pass Bergstrom.  Freshman Samantha Pion (Easthampton, Mass.) picked up the second assist.

Stephens came up big in the overtime session stopping USM junior Erin Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.) on a breakaway in the opening seconds.  The Spartans also survive a 5-on-3 short-handed situation for a span of 1:24 early in the overtime.  The Huskies played the final 1:14 if the overtime shorthanded, but the Spartans did not put a shot on goal.

Southern Maine is back in action on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) with a rescheduled game against New England College.  Castleton State travels to Plymouth State University on Tuesday (6:00 p.m.) for a rescheduled game.
