Little East Conference Quarterfinal: UMass Dartmouth Defeats USM 2-0

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.  – Seniors Tori Dolce (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) and Devon Herlihy (Exeter, N.H.) each scored a goal in the first half to lead the fourth-seeded UMass Dartmouth Corsairs to a 2-0 win over the fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Little East Conference Championship tournament Tuesday night at Cressy Field.

With the win, UMass Dartmouth improves to 14-6 overall and advances to the semifinals of the LEC Championship.  The Corsairs will face top-seeded Keene State College on Thursday (tba).  Keene State defeated Worcester State 4-0 in its quarterfinal game.  Southern Maine finishes its season with a 10-11 record.

Dolce put the Corsairs on the board early notching her seventh goal of the season off of an assist from freshman Hunter Carden (Branford, Conn.) following one of UMD's nine penalty corners in the sixth minute. Seven minutes later Herlihy doubled the Corsair advantage with her eighth goal of the season on a double assist from senior Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, Mass./Bishop Stang) and sophomore Emily Anderson (Medway, Mass.) in the 13th minute. 

Ahead 2-0 midway through the opening half, the Corsairs made the score stand over the next 57 minutes to secure the win.  UMD outshot the Huskies 29-7 and held a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners.  Corsair senior Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) earned the shutout for her 14th win of the season making one save.  Southern Maine freshman Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) made 12 saves in the loss.
