Bates Rolls Past Southern Maine 9-0

            LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Dan Remillard (Hanover, N.H.) and sophomore Luis Pereira (Curitiba, Brazil) each scored two goals as the Bates College Bobcats rolled past the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 9-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match under the lights Wednesday night at Garcelon Field.

            The win was the third straight for the Bobcats, and lifts their overall record to 4-5-2.  The Huskies, winless on the season, fall to 0-14-1.

            Rookie Peabo Knoth (Portland, Maine/Waynflete) added a goal and two assists while sophomore Noah Riskind (Bethesda, Md.) contributed three assists to the Bates attack.  Sophomore goalkeepers Sam Polito (Far Hills, N.J./Bernards) and Joe Maffly-Kipp (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) combined for the clean sheet.  Polito did not need to record a save in the opening 45 minutes while Maffly-Kipp made two saves in the final 45 minutes.

            Southern Maine rookie goalkeepers Matthew Willis (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and Adam Verreault (Poland, Maine) combined to make six saves.

            Remillard gave the Bobcats the only goal they would need in the seventh minute of play heading home a free kick taken by Riskind.  The lead doubled in the 19th minute when a cross was knocked into the net by a USM defender for an own goal.

            Sophomore Wes Shrewsbury (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) and Remillard scored 94 seconds apart late in the half to expand the Bates' lead to 4-0 at the break.  Knoth earned the assist on Shrewsbury's goal while Riskind picked up his second assist on Remillard's marker.

            Southern Maine is on the road on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) for a Little East Conference match at Western Connecticut State University.  Bates hosts Middlebury College on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) for a NESCAC match.
