Eastern Connecticut Pulls Away from Southern Maine 4-1

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Mitch Power (Douglas, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to help the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors overcome an early 1-0 deficit and post a 4-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, the Warriors extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games (8-0-3) since dropping their season opener to Widener University.  The Warriors are now 8-1-3 overall and remain atop the LEC standings with 10 points via a 3-0-1 mark.  The Huskies, still searching for their first win of the campaign, fall to 0-13-1 overall and 0-4-0 in league play.

The Huskies threw a scare into the Warriors grabbing a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of play.  Junior Nat LeBlanc (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) crossed a ball from the right wing that found its way to classmate Caleb Leino (Lewiston, Maine) on the back post.  Leino bounced his six-yard shot off the left post into the right side netting for his second marker of the season.

The lead stood until the 41st minute when Power deposited a penalty kick into the right side of the net past USM senior goalkeeper Stephen Sweatt (Scarborough, Maine).  The Warriors were awarded the kick from the spot after a USM defender was whistled for a handball in the box.

Senior Carl Stensland (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) gave the Warriors the lead for good early in the second half as he intercepted an errant clearing pass, took a couple of dribbles and rocketed an 18-yard shot into the left top corner of the net.  The goal was the first of the season for Stensland.

Power put the game away in the 79th minute when he took a feed from sophomore Tim Jennison (Coventry, Conn.) and faked Sweatt out of position for an easy tap in.  Freshman Nicolas Warren (Southbury, Conn./Holy Cross) added another insurance marker in the 84th minute.

ECSU freshman goalkeeper Greg Walton (Brunswick, Maine) recorded one save to earn his eighth win of the season.  Sweatt finished a commendable performance with three saves.  Sweat was pressed into emergency duty in goal as both of USM's regular keepers were out with injuries.

The Warriors finished the match with a 20-5 advantage in shots and a 12-3 margin in corner kicks.

Southern Maine begins a stretch of four straight road matches on Wednesday (8:00 p.m.) when it travels to Bates College.  Eastern Connecticut returns home to host Babson College on Monday (3:00 p.m.).
