Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Danielle Phalon (Stoneham, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the visiting Salve Regina University Seahawks to a 4-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC Women's East game Friday at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the third straight for the Seahawks who improve to 11-7-0 overall and 7-4-0 in league play. The Seahawks remained tied for fourth place with Holy Cross as each has 14 points after Friday's action. The Huskies dropped their fifth straight game to slide to 4-9-4 overall and 3-6-2 in ECAC play.
The Seahawks fell behind 1-0 at 5:04 of the opening period as USM senior Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) picked up a loose puck at the blue line, skated in alone and slid a forehand shot past the left pad of goalie Ali Muehlbronner (Glenside, Pa.). The unassisted goal was the sixth of the season for Bubier, and the 40th of her career. Bubier became the fourth player in the history of the USM women's program to reach that milestone.
Salve Regina got the equalizer at 7:07 of the second period when sophomore Taylor Shepherd (Quincy, Mass.) tallied her 11th goal of the season. Phalon got what proved to be the game winner with 45 seconds remaining in the period scoring a power-play goal off passes from junior Shannon Coleman (Chicago, Ill.) and rookie Shelby Johnson (Sterling, Mass.). The goal was her eighth of the season.
Phalon provided the Seahawks with an insurance tally when she scored a short-handed tally at 6:04 of the third period. Sophomore Michaela Chiuccariello (Winchester, Mass.) picked up the lone assist. Sophomore Sarah Markey (Ashland, Mass.) closed the scoring with her sixth marker of the season at 8:41.
Muehlbronner finished the game stopping 16 of 17 USM shots before giving way to freshman Mariah Mosher (Auburn, Maine) with 5:01 to play. Mosher was credited with one save. Sophomore Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) had 22 saves in 46 minutes for USM. Freshman Jenn Fuller (Houston, B.C.) made 13 stops over the final 14 minutes.
Chiuccariello had two assists for the Seahawks while Shepherd had two points on her goal and an assist on Markey's goal.
Salve Regina outshot USM 39-18 for the game, including a 31-8 margin over the final two periods.
Southern Maine is back in action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting Holy Cross in an ECAC Women's East contest. Salve Regina travels to Plymouth State University on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) for league game.
