Southern Maine Downs UNE 1-0 for First Win

            BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Freshman Michael Daniel (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) scored the only goal of the match in the 77th minute to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 1-0 non-conference victory of the University of New England Nor'easters in men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Barbara Hazard Field.

            The win was the first of the season for the Huskies (1-2), and their first against the Nor'easters since 2008.  The Nor'easters (1-2) dropped their second straight outing after a season-opening win against Maine Maritime.

            Daniel received a pass from classmate Kevin Deignan (Pepperell, Mass./Bishop Guertin), took two touches and beat UNE sophomore goalkeeper Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) for his first collegiate goal.

            USM senior goalkeeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering), making his first start of the season, earned his second career shutout making six saves.  McParland finished the day with three saves.

            The Nor'easters held a 15-9 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 edge in the second half, and a 7-3 margin in corner kicks.

            Southern Maine travels to Worcester State University for a non-conference match on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).  UNE will host New England College on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match.
