Westfield State Slips Past Southern Maine

Box Score
GORHAM, Maine  – Freshman Taylor Chase (Holden, Mass.) and senior Liz Hall (Southwick, Mass.) each scored a goal to lead the Westfield State University Owls to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field in Gorham, Maine.

Westfield State improves to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference with the win.  The Huskies fall to 4-7 and 1-4 in the Little East with their sixth consecutive loss.

Behind an unassisted goal in the ninth minute from sophomore Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) the Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Owls.  However, Westfield State did not have to wait long to score the equalizer as Chase redirected a well-struck centering pass from senior Lauren Tavares (Tiverton, RI) in the 12th minute.  The assist was the first of two for Tavares.

Westfield grabbed the lead in the 16th minute as Tavares set a neatly timed pass across the circle to a streaking Hall for the 2-1 lead.

Southern Maine hosts Plymouth State University on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).  Westfield State hosts in-state rival Fitchburg State University on Tuesday evening (7:30 p.m.).
