UMass Boston Cruises Past Southern Maine 3-0

BOSTON – Led by Brooke Nemethy's (Oviedo, Fla.) match-high 10 kills and .667 attack percentage, the UMass Boston Beacons notched their second conference win of the season as they defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies by the final of 3-0 in a Little East Conference women's volleyball match Thursday evening at the Reggie Lewis Center.

            The Beacons defeated the visiting Huskies by the finals of 25-7, 25-14, and 25-18.  With the win UMass improves to 8-4 on the year, 2-0 in the Little East Conference.  Southern Maine fell to 4-8, 0-2 in conference play.

            For Nemethy her 10 kills came on 15 attempts, with freshman Molly Witzmann (Encinitas, Calif.) finishing second on the team with eight kills on 15 attempts (.333).  Blair Boyer (Encinitas, Calif.) stepped up and finished with five kills in two sets.  Southern Maine saw juniors Annie Mitchell (Gorham, Maine) and Madalyn Terry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) each score four kills in the contest.

            Setters Megan Pollock (Wilton, Calif.) and Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, Fla.) finished with 16 and 12 assists respectively, while Huskies' freshman Bridget Burns (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) put-up five assists.

As a squad the Beacons scored 10 aces, with Rocha tallying four of those, two of which helped the Beacons to the second set victory.  Christine DuPuis led the defense with a match-high 11 digs, while Demi Ruder posted nine digs for the Huskies.

            The Beacons return to action on Saturday when they host Rhode Island College at 1 p.m. at North Quincy High School in a Little East Conference match.  Southern Maine hosts Western Connecticut State and Lyndon State on Saturday (10:00 a.m.).
