WATERVILLE, Maine – Junior Michael Hand (Essex, England) scored a pair of goals to lead the unbeaten Thomas College Terriers a 2-1 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer match played in rainy, storm-like conditions Tuesday night.
The win was the third straight for the Terriers who improved to 4-0-1 overall. The Huskies dropped their fourth straight match to slide to 1-6-0.
Hand would receive a cross from sophomore Marcus Johnson (Sandy's, Bermuda) on the right side of the pitch, and buried a shot past USM senior goalkeeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) in the 22nd minute.
Midway through the second half, Hand again would strike, taking a pass from sophomore Kenny Cano (Lowell, Mass.) and striking it over Turner for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The Huskies would cut the deficit to one with eight minutes remaining as freshman Harrison Hall (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) picked up a pass from sophomore Tyler Barsalow (Rutland, Vt.) and got through the defensive line, putting it past junior keeper Mikkail Crockwell (St. David's, Bermuda).
Both squads had 14 shots in the contest, with Thomas holding a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Huskies will travel to Keene State College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. The Terriers return to the turf Friday (5:00 p.m.) when they face Johnson State College in a North Atlantic Conference game.
