Box Score GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Zach Danssaert (Solana Beach, Calif.) had two goals and an assist and senior Eddie Jones (Scarborough, Maine) tallied a goal and two assists as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears rolled past the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-0 in a non-conference men's soccer match Monday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win levels the Polar Bears overall record at 1-1. The Huskies dropped their second straight match to fall to 1-4 on the season.
The Polar Bears built a 2-0 lead in the opening half on goals from junior Ben Brewster (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Danssaert. Jones assisted on both goals. Brewster picked up his goal in the sixth minute of play flicking in a header of a Jones throw-in. Danssaert doubled the advantage in the 29th minute redirecting a Jones cross from the left wing channel with his head.
The Huskies played better during the opening 20 minutes of the second half, but it was the Polar Bears who did all the scoring netting six markers over the final 25 minutes. Senior Michael Gale (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Daniel Melong (Winnipeg, Man.), Jones, sophomore Eric Goitia (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Danssaert and sophomore Sam White (Falmouth, Maine) scored as the Polar Bears blew the match open.
Each side employed two goalkeepers in the match. Junior Will Wise (Cohasset, Mass.) and sophomore Ian McNamara (Cincinnati, Ohio) shared the shutout with Wise making one save. Freshman Chad O'Brien (Providence, R.I.) started for the Huskies and made five saves before giving way to classmate Korey Mulherin (Leeds, Maine) with 18 minutes to play. Mulherin recorded three stops.
Southern Maine opens its Little East Conference schedule this Saturday (12:00 p.m.) hosting Western Connecticut State University. Bowdoin entertains the University of Maine Farmington on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
