Colby Holds Off Southern Maine 2-1

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Colby College Mules women's ice hockey team used a two-goal first period to get out ahead and held on to beat the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 2-1, at Alfond Rink Tuesday night.

            With the loss, the Southern Maine falls to 1-2-2 overall.  Colby improves to 1-2 with the win.

            Colby junior Natalie Fischer (Freeland, Md./Hereford) gave the Mules a 1-0 lead 3:09 into the first period off assists from sophomores Lauren Guarente (Wellesley, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and Carolyn Fuwa (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier).

            Colby struck again with 31 seconds remaining in the period when junior Annie Papadellis (Hopkinton, Mass./Middlesex School) took passes from sophomore Jackie Tavella (East Longmeadow, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and junior Samantha Slotnick (Canterbury, Conn./Pomfret School) for her second goal of the season.

            USM got on the board 7:53 into the third period when senior forward Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine/Hebron Academy) scored her third goal of the season off assists from senior Katie Davis (Woburn, Mass.) and freshman Sarah Timmons (Fall River, N.S./Ontario Hockey Academy).

            USM freshman goaltender Jenn Fuller (Houston, B.C./Pacific Steelers), playing in her first collegiate game, made 31 saves, including 18 in the first period and 11 in the third.

            Colby junior goaltender Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ont./Kimball Union Academy) made 20 saves.

            The Huskies will be back in action on Nov. 30 when they travel to Nichols College for an ECAC Women's East Conference matchup (7:40 p.m.).

            Colby will play against UMass Boston in a non-conference game (3:00 p.m.).
