Huskies, Spartans Skate to 1-1 Overtime Tie

Box Score

RUTLAND, Vt. – Senior forward Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) scored midway through the second period and sophomore goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) stopped 29 shots to give the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies a 1-1 overtime tie against the Castleton State Spartans in ECAC Women's East action Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.

The tie was the second straight for the Huskies who played to a 4-4, overtime draw at New England College on Friday.  The Huskies are now 1-1-2 overall and in league play.  The Spartans, unbeaten in their last three games (2-0-1), are 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in ECAC Women's East games.

Bubier pounced on the rebound of a shot from sophomore Talya Bent (Cranston, R.I.) and put the puck behind Castleton State sophomore goalie Paula Stephens (Seattle, Wash.) at 12:03 of the second period for her second goal of the season.  Bent and freshman Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.) picked up the assists on the play.

Castleton tallied its only goal at 5:45 of the middle period.  Rookie Nicoline Jensen (Hellerup, Denmark) potted her fifth goal of the season when she tapped home the rebound of classmate Samantha Pion's (Easthampton, Mass.) shot for a power-play marker at 5:45.  Senior Jade Werger (Maple Ridge, B.C.) also earned an assist.

Bergstrom and Stephens protected the tie throughout the third period and overtime session.  Castleton outshot USM in the third period, 10-8, and overtime period, 4-3, and finished the game with a 30-29 edge in shots on goal.  Stephens recorded 28 saves for the Spartans.

Southern Maine travels to Colby College for a non-conference game on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) before taking a break for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Castleton is off until November 30 (4:00 p.m.) when travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston.
