Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass./Tantasqua Regional) scored two goals to the lead the third-seeded Bridgewater State University Bears to a 3-0 win over the seventh-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first round of the 2012 Little East Conference field hockey tournament championship Thursday night at Swenson Field in Bridgewater, Mass.
With their fourth straight win, the Bears improve to 17-2 overall and advance to the semifinal round. The Bears will face third-seed Keene State College Owls on Saturday. Southern Maine concludes its season with a 9-12 record.
After a scoreless opening 20-plus minutes, BSU junior Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) put the Bears ahead 1-0 off of an assist from classmate Carissa Vizakis (Bellingham, Mass.) in the 25th minute. Farland followed Miskiv just three minutes later knocking in a goal off of one of the Bears' eight penalty corners. Farland completed the assist from freshman Jennifer Arnold (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) and Vizakis in the 28th minute.
Taking its 2-0 lead into the half, the BSU held the score at 2-0 until the 60th minute when Farland again connected with Arnold for her second goal of the game for the 3-0 final.
Bridgewater State held a decisive 25-4 edge in shots and an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners. USM junior goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) made eight saves, while juniors Cristina Mountain (Dexter, Maine) and Rebecca Pratt (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) each made a defensive save. Bridgewater State junior goalkeeper Kacie Surgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) made three saves for the shutout.
