CASTINE, Maine – Sophomore Mazen Aljari (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) scored the lone goal of the match in the 107th minute to give the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies a 1-0, double-overtime victory over the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
The win was the second straight for the Huskies, and improved their overall record to 3-8-0. The Mariners had their two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-5-0.
Aljari gave the Huskies the victory after taking a pass from freshman Michael Daniel (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), eluding an MMA defender and beating junior goalkeeper William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va./Fort Union Military Academy) with a shot into the low left corner. The goal was the third of the season for Mazen who leads the Huskies in goals scored.
USM senior goalkeeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) recorded four saves, all in the second overtime period, to earn his second straight shutout, and third shutout of the season. Turner triggered the Huskies' counterattack that produced Aljari's goal after making a save on MMA rookie Jonathan Reeks (Bedford, N.H.). All four of Turner's saves came against Reeks in the second overtime period. Lacour had three saves.
Southern Maine held a slim 14-13 edge in shots during the match despite MMA outshooting USM 6-2 in the 16-plus minutes of extra time. MMA had a huge 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Southern Maine travels to Little East Conference rival Plymouth State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Maine Maritime will play at Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday (3:30 p.m.).
