Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Annabelle Frenette (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) scored her second goal of the season in the 58th minute to break a 1-1 deadlock and lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field in Gorham, Maine.
The win is the fourth straight for the Huskies who improve to 9-11 overall and 5-6 in the Little East Conference. Suffering its fourth consecutive loss, the Colonials fall to 5-12 and 3-8 in the LEC.
The Huskies led Western Connecticut 1-0 in the 20th minute after sophomore Peyton Dostie (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored her team-leading 15th goal of the season. Dostie tipped in a redirected ball from junior Cailley Bonti (Bath, Maine/Morse) following a driven centering pass from junior Cristina Mountain (Dexter, Maine). Dostie's 15 goals this season moves her into a three-way tie for fifth in USM single-season records.
Colonial junior Kim Gigante (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) snagged her team-leading seventh goal of the season with an unassisted goal in the 26th minute to pull the teams even at 1-1. The score remained at one all through the half.
Frenette earned the game-winner for the Huskies' hustling her way to a loose ball in front of the cage following a penalty corner for the 2-1 USM lead. Freshman Allison Ward (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) added an insurance goal in the 60th minute for the 3-1 final. Ward tapped in her third goal of the season off a flat ball across the middle of the circle from junior Ariel Kaplan (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood).
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Little East Conference Field Hockey Championship tournament. Southern Maine's opponent and game time is still to be determined.
