Box Score GORHAM, Maine – The Keene State College Owls volleyball team had five players with five or more kills to highlight a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-16) straight set sweep over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference match at Hill Gym Tuesday night.
With the win, the Owls — who are in third place in the LEC — improve their record to 16-13 overall, and 5-2 in the LEC. The Huskies slip to 9-19 overall, and remain winless in the LEC at 0-7.
After being defeated in the first set, the Huskies fought back after being down in the second set to tie the score at 22. The owls kept the pressure on, though, and took advantage of Southern Maine's mistakes down the stretch to hold on for the win. Keene State finished the third set with a team low on the night 11 kills, but still held on to win the set and sweep the match.
Freshman outside hitter Angela Silveri (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) led an aggressive Keene State attack with a game-high eight kills, and sophomore libero Sammy Dormio (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) and freshman middle blocker Catherine Kazazian (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in with seven kills apiece.
Freshman setter Alexis Michal (Windham, N.H./Central Catholic) added six kills, a game-high seven aces, and 27 assists, and Silveri chipped in with three aces. Freshman middle blocker Madeline Nossif (Portsmouth, N.H.) had five kills, freshman outside hitter Christine Hadfield (Waterford, Conn.) contributed with four kills, freshman libero Kaitlin Boyer (W. Greenwich, R.I./Cushing Academy) finished with nine digs, and Dormio turned in seven digs of her own.
For Southern Maine, junior outside hitter Madalyn Terry (Kennebunkport, Maine/Kennebunk) led the offense with six kills. Freshman middle blocker Kelsey Abramson (Deerfield, Mass./Frontier Regional) had an impressive night up front with four block assists, and freshman libero Demi Ruder (Clifton, Colo./Central) finished with a game-high 11 digs.
Junior outside hitter Annie Mitchell (Gorham, Maine) had two block assists, and sophomore setter Nicole Hansen (Biddeford, Maine) and sophomore opposite hitter Abby Boissonneault (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) each finished with one.
Southern Maine is back in action tomorrow when they host the University of New England (7:00 p.m.) in a non-conference match at Hill Gym.
