WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- The unbeaten Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors got goals from three players Saturday en route to a 3-0 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field.
The victory, coupled with Keene State College's overtime win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, lifted Eastern Connecticut into first place in the LEC standings. The Warriors are 14-0-1 overall and lead the LEC with a 5-0-1 mark. Southern Maine falls to 4-12-0 overall and 1-5-0 in conference play.
Eastern scored the first goal just 73 seconds into the game on Mitch Power's (Douglas, Mass.) seventh goal of the season, on assists from Matt Furman (Montville, Conn.) and Cory Tobler (Portland, Conn.). Furman started with the ball and passed it to Tobler who gave a great lead pass to Power who was able to beat USM senior keeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) in the box.
One of the limited opportunities Southern Maine had came in the 37th minute when sophomore Mazen Aljari (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) had a shot on Eastern senior keeper Jordan Munsell (Waterford, Conn.) that would have tied the match. Aljari had an open look from the left corner of the box and attempted to beat Munsell on the near post but the shot was caught.
This missed chance to tie the game proved costly for Southern Maine when just three minutes later Eastern added its second goal. Carl Stensland (Storrs, Conn.) scored from an assist by Zach Kice (Denver, Colo.) off a ball that had been batted out of the box by Turner moments earlier.
In the 84th minute, freshman Timothy Jennison (Coventry, Conn.) scored the final goal to extend the lead to three. Jennison scored unassisted as he put the ball off the hand of Turner before it found the back of the net.
Munsell needed only two saves to register his eighth shutout of the season. Turner was credited with three saves. Eastern had a 19-4 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in corners.
Southern Maine will host Salem State University on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) in a non-conference match. Eastern Connecticut will be on the road Sunday (2:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game at Babson College.
