Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Junior Victor Ferreira (St, Michael, Portugal) scored his third goal of the match 1:10 into sudden death overtime to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs a 4-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win was the third straight for the conference-leading Corsairs, and improved their record to 10-3-0 overall and 5-0-0 in conference play. The Huskies dropped to 4-10-0 overall and 1-4-0 in LEC games.
Junior Anthony dos Santos (New Bedford, Mass.) slipped a pass between two USM defenders to Ferreira who took one touch and beat senior goalkeeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) low inside the right post. The three goals give Ferreira a team-high eight markers on the season.
The two sides were deadlocked at 2-2 after an entertaining opening 45 minutes of play. Ferreira scored twice for the Corsairs to offset USM goals by sophomore Mazen Aljari (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) and rookie Ahmed Ben Afif (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia).
Ferreira gave the visitors a 1-0 in the third minute with an unassisted goal into the top of the net. Aljari countered when he converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute. Ferreira restored the Corsairs' lead in the 20th minute converting a through pass from senior Fouad Shahin (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet). Ben Afif tallied his first collegiate goal taking a pass from sophomore Tyler Hartman (Lewiston, Maine) and beating UMD senior keeper Michael Phelan (Carver, Mass.) in the 36th minute.
Aljari and Ben Afif combined to give the Huskies their only lead of the match in the 52nd minute as Aljari slipped a shot by Phelan for his sixth goal of the campaign. Junior Adam Philbin (Cumberland, R.I.) equalized for the Corsairs three minutes later with his fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Jordan Sindo (New Bedford, Mass.) picked up the assist on Philbin's goal.
Phelan finished the match with four saves. Turner was credited with two saves, including a right-handed parry over the bar of a 20-yard blast by Philbin in the late stages of regulation time.
UMD had an 18-15 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks during the match.
Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) hosting Bates College. UMass Dartmouth will host Worcester State University under the lights on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
