Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Senior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland) scored 16 points in 19 minutes of action to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 94-52 win over the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham, Maine.
With its third straight win, Southern Maine improves to 13-4 overall and 5-2 in the Little East Conference. Eastern Connecticut falls to 6-11 and 2-5 with the loss.
The Huskies led wire-to-wire, scoring the first four points of the contests and never looking back en route to its highest point total of the season. Cochran was 5-for-12 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. She added six rebounds and a season-high four assists. Senior guard Nicole Garland (Portland, Maine/Deering) added 12 points, three assists and two steals in 18 minutes. Garland was perfect from the field finishing the game 4-for-4, including a trio of three-pointers. Garland's first three-pointer of the game was the 100th of her career and moves her to number 10 in the career record books for the Huskies.
Sophomore guard Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and freshman forward Abby Hasson (South Portland, Maine) each scored 11 points, while junior forward Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) tossed in 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Eastern Connecticut freshman forward Shannon McCourt (New Fairfield, Conn.) led all scorers with 21 points. McCourt was 8-for-18 from the field and added five rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard Kristina Forsman (Newington, Conn.) added 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists and freshman guard Danyelle Rodriguez (Willimantic, Conn./Windham) tossed in nine points.
Southern Maine shot an outstanding 66.7 percent (22-for-33) from the field in the opening half and cruised to an overwhelming 53-19 lead at the break. Comfortably ahead 22-11 with 13:07 to play in the first half, the Huskies rattled off a 15-0 run over the next five minutes and 23 seconds to lead 37-11 with 7:44 to play. Five different players scored in the run for the Huskies, led by six points from Hasson. After the 15-0 run, the Huskies outscored Eastern Connecticut 16-7 over the final minutes of the first half.
Southern Maine started the second half with a three-pointer from McNamara to lead 56-19 and the Warriors were never able to get any closer than 33 points the rest of the half. The Huskies led by as many as 50 points, 89-39, with just under six minutes to play.
The Huskies finished the game shooting 54.4 percent (37-for-68) from the field and 60.0 percent (9-for-15) from three-point range. Eastern shot 31.1 percent (19-for-61) from the floor.
Southern Maine travels to Plymouth State University on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.). Eastern Connecticut State hosts Keene State (5:30 p.m.).
