Southern Maine Cruises Past UMass Dartmouth 89-60

GORHAM, Maine – Junior forward Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field to lead a balanced attack as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled to an 89-60 win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham, Maine.

         The win improves the Huskies overall record to 11-4 on the season and 3-2 in the Little East.  UMass Dartmouth falls to 9-5 and 2-3 in the conference.

         Jordan was one of five Southern Maine players in double figures.  Senior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while junior forward Jordan Grant (Concord, N.H./Concord) added a career-high 12 points and nine rebounds off of the bench.  Senior guard Nicole Garland (Portland, Maine/Deering) and freshman forward Abby Hasson (South Portland, Maine) each added 10 points. 

         Junior forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, Mass.) led the Corsairs with 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.  Sophomore forward Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass) added seven points and seven rebounds. 

         Trailing 9-4 following a layup from Corsair senior guard Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, Mass.) four and a half minutes into the game, the Huskies rattled off a game-changing 27-0 run to take control and lead 31-9 with 6:27 left in the first half.  Four different players figures in the scoring for the Huskies' run, led by nine points from Cochran, eight from Grant and seven from Jordan. 

         Sophomore guard Megan Sheehan (Carver, Mass.) ended the Corsair drought with a three-pointer at 6:02 for a 31-12 USM lead, but the Huskies outscored the Corsairs 12-8 to close out the half and lead 43-20 at the break. 

         Southern Maine continued to push offensively in the second half, opening with a 9-0 run to grab an overwhelming 52-20 with 18:02 remaining in the game.  Garland scored the first five points of the second half on a jumper and a three-pointer, followed by back-to-back layups from Jordan. 

         The Huskies led by as many as 35 points, 87-52, with 3:55 left in the game as the Corsairs were unable to get any closer than 28 points the rest of the way. 

         Southern Maine shot 50.0 percent (36-for-72) from the field, including 57.6 percent (19-for-33) in the second half.  UMass Dartmouth shot 37.5 percent (24-for-64) from the field and were hampered by 19 turnovers.  Led by Jordan and Cochran the Huskies outscored UMD 54-24 in the paint and scored 22 of their 89 points off of turnovers. 

         Southern Maine travels to UMass Boston on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).  UMass Dartmouth hosts Rhode Island College on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).
