UNE Blanks Southern Maine 4-0

Box Score

PORTLAND, Maine -- Sophomore Steven Contestabile (Rochester, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals and senior Kiel Hiller (Galloway, N.J.) added a goal and an assist as the University of New England Nor'easters picked up their first win of the season by defeating the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 4-0, in a non-conference match played in a light rain at Memorial Field.

The Nor'easters are now 1-3-0 on the season.  The Huskies dropped their third straight game to open the season 0-3.

Junior Riley Goodrich (Gorham, N.H.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 20th minute when his 15-yard shot from the right slipped through USM freshman goalie Alex Charette (Fort Kent, Maine).  Contestabile tallied his first marker of the game in the 43rd minute when his free kick from the left side found its way through the USM defenders and into the far side netting.

Hiller increased the lead to 3-0 in the 49th minute when he placed a perfect header past Charette off a cross from sophomore Matthew Christie (Hudson, N.H.).  Contestabile closed the scoring in the 64th minute taking a nifty back heal flick from Hiller to beat Charette from 10 yards.

The Nor'easters split the goaltending duties as freshman Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) played the first half and recorded one save.  Senior Jon Planer (Yarmouth, Maine) played the second half and made two stops.  Charette went the distance for the Huskies registering six saves.  UNE held a 16-5 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) hosting Worcester State University.  UNE returns home on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) to host Curry College.
