WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior Eric Barthold (Lyme, N.H.) scored the game-winning goal and dished out an assist as the Colby College Mules blanked the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 4-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon.
The outcome was the 250th career win for veteran Colby head coach Mark Serdjenian. A Colby alum, Serdjenian now has a 250-207-43 record in his 36 seasons at Colby.
The win was the second straight, and fourth in the last five matches, for the Mules who improved to 4-2-0 overall. The Huskies dropped to 2-7-0 overall.
The Mules, who piled up an 18-0 shot advantage in the first half, took a 1-0 on Barthold's goal in the 38th minute. Barthold one-timed a shot from in front past USM junior goalkeeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) off a nice centering pass from rookie Andrew Woonton (Boxford, Mass.) in the 38th minute.
Colby had three players score their first collegiate goals in the second half. Sophomore Chris Pratt (Wellesley, Mass.) headed in a cross from senior Matt Boyes-Watson (Cambridge, Mass.) on a play that started off a corner kick in the 58th minute.
Barthold set up the third goal when his long pass turned into a 50-50 ball with USM rookie goalkeeper Ian Dollen-Oliveto (Omaha, Neb.) and Colby freshman Charlie Dupee (Portland, Maine). The two reached the ball at the same time, but Dupee managed to get past Dollen-Oliveto and tap the ball into the empty goal.
Freshman Jake Lukach (Easton, Conn.) had the shot of the day on Colby's fourth goal. He turned on a shot from about 20 yards out and ripped the ball into the upper left corner of the net with 7:35 to play.
Senior Ben Joslin (Chicago, Ill.) made two saves in 61:30 for the Mules, and rookie Peter Quayle (Lincoln, Mass) made one save the rest of the way to share the shutout.
Turner made seven saves in the first half for Southern Maine and allowed just the one goal. Freshman Alex Charette (Fort Kent, Maine) and Dollen-Oliveto combined for six stops in the second half.
Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. Colby travels to Connecticut this weekend for NESCAC games at Trinity College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) and Wesleyan University on Sunday (2:30 p.m.).
