Box Score PORTLAND, Maine -- Senior forward Zach Kabelac (Potomac, Md.) scored three times in the opening 20 minutes as the Engineers of MIT rolled past the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 7-0, in a first round game of the Southern Maine Husky Fall Classic played Friday afternoon at Memorial Field.
The game was the season opener for both teams. M.I.T. will play Saint Joseph's College and USM tangles with Salve Regina University in the final round of the tournament on Saturday.
In the sixth minute, Kabelac headed home the rebound of a shot taken by senior midfielder Max Stein-Golenbock (Boston, Mass./Roxbury Latin) to make it 1-0. USM junior goalie Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) got a hand on Stein-Golenbock's shot, but could not control the rebound. Twelve minutes later, Kabelac pounced on a misplayed ball and lifted a flick over Turner for his second marker. He completed his hat trick less than minute later converting a pass from sophomore Jonathan Tebes (Hamden, Conn.).
Rookie Nick Diamantoni (Belle Mead, N.J.) would add a goal in the 30th minute off a cross from junior Chris Hammond (Wilmington, Del.). The Engineers dominated the first half out shooting the Huskies 13-0.
Freshman John Kramer (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored two unassisted goals, and rookie Alexander Dago (Chicago, Ill.) netted a goal off an assist from Hammond, as the Engineers tacked on three more tallies in the second half.
Senior Dylan Rankin (Providence. R.I.) and freshman Samuel Cannon (Scarsdale, N.Y.) combined to post the clean sheet in the M.I.T. goal. Neither was forced to make a save. Turner had five saves in the first half before giving way to freshman Ian Dollen-Oliveto (Omaha, Neb.). Dollen-Oliveto registered three saves in the second half.
