BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Senior forward Nick Powell (Enfield, N.H./Kimball Union) scored a pair of first-half goals as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears cruised past the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Pickard Field.
The win was the third straight for the Polar Bears since their season-opening, overtime loss at Wesleyan. The Huskies, who picked up their first win of the season at Western Connecticut on Saturday, slip to 1-6-0.
Bowdoin exploded for its three goals in a span of 7:26 midway through the first half to take control of the contest. Rookie forward Sam White (Falmouth, Maine) gave the home side the only goal it would need when he redirected a cross from junior midfielder Alex Thomas (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) past USM junior goalkeeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) at 18:23.
Powell found the net with the first of his two goals just 1:36 later when he converted a cross from rookie Thomas Henshall (Madison, N.J./Newark Academy). Powell finished off the scoring blitz at 25:49 when he blasted a shot under the crossbar. Thomas picked up the lone assist. Powell now has five goals on the season.
Sophomore Will Wise (Cohasset, Mass.) and rookie Ian McNamara (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seven Hills School) combined for the shutout in the Bowdoin goal. Neither had to record a save during the match at Bowdoin out shot Southern Maine 37-2. Southern Maine used all three goalkeepers on its roster. Turner started and registered two saves before giving way to freshman Alex Charette (Fort Kent, Maine). Charette stopped four shots over 34 minutes of play. Freshman Ian Dollen-Oliveto (Omaha, NE/Creighton Prep) played the final 20 minutes and had three saves.
Southern Maine returns home on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) to host Thomas College in a non-conference match. Bowdoin is off until Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it host Middlebury College in a NESCAC match.
