NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and had five assists as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs, 82-51, in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Tripp Athletic Center.
Southern Maine improves to 9-1 in the Little East Conference and 14-7 overall with the win. With its second straight loss, UMass Dartmouth falls to 6-15 and 2-8 in the conference.
DeMillo was 5-for-9 from three-point range en route to her game-high 22 points. Her five three-pointers gave her the USM career record for three-pointers with 197. DeMillo surpassed former standout Lori Towle who sank 196 in three seasons (1992-94; 1995-96).
Junior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland) notched her team-leading 12th double-double of the season scoring 11 points and capturing a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore forward Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) added 10 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Freshman forward Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass.) paced the Corsairs with 21 points on a 9-for-17 shooting performance and eight rebounds. Senior guard Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) had 10 points, seven rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.
Despite an anemic 8-for-29 shooting performance from the field (27.6 percent) in the first half, the Huskies led the Corsairs, 33-23, at the break. DeMillo helped keep the Huskies afloat in the first half knocking down a trio of three-pointers en route to 11 points.
The second half was a different story for the Huskies as they outscored the Corsairs, 49-28, over the final 20 minutes. Ahead 39-27 following a jumper from Bornemann with 16:48 to play, the Huskies held the Corsairs scoreless over the next 7:13 while stringing together a 19-0 run to put the game out of reach. Seven different players scored during that stretch for the Huskies, led by DeMillo and Cochran with five points apiece, for a 58-27 lead with 9:35 to play.
The Corsairs never got any closer than 27 points the rest of the way as the Huskies cruised for the victory. The Huskies shot significantly better in the second half, connecting on 17-of-33 from the field for a 51.5 percent mark. The Huskies finished the game shooting 40.3 percent (25-for-62). The Corsairs shot 30.5 percent for the game (18-for-59).
