Rhode Island College Rolls Past USM 85-54

            PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior guard Mason Choice (Newport, R.I./Rogers) scored a game-high 20 points to lead four players in double figures as the Rhode Island College Anchormen downed the University of Southern Maine Huskies 85-54 in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at The Murray Center.

            With its fourth straight win, Rhode Island College improves to 15-7 overall and 9-3 in the Little East.  Southern Maine dropped its ninth consecutive game to fall to 9-14 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

            Choice was 4-for-7 from the field and 12-for-14 from the free throw line to lead the Anchormen.  He also had six rebounds, four assists and two steals.  Senior guard Antone Gray (Providence, R.I./St. Raphael) tossed in 12 points on four three-pointers, while junior center Mike Akinrola (Woonsocket, R.I.) and sophomore Steven Roberts (New Haven, Conn./Hillhouse) each scored 10 points.

            Senior guard Devin Chambers (Memphis, Tenn./Oak Hill Academy) led Southern Maine with 13 points, six rebounds and two assists.  Freshman guard Conor Sullivan (Scarborough, Maine) was the only other Husky to reach double figures chipping in 10 points off the bench to go along with five rebounds and a pair of steals.

            Ahead by seven (25-18) with 7:48 to play, the Anchormen used a 10-0 run to take control of the game.  Choice and senior forward Carl Lee (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) each scored four points in the run.  The Anchormen remained in control and took a solid 37-22 lead at the break.

            The Anchormen continued to pour in the points in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 25-15 in the opening eight minutes to assume a commanding 62-37 lead with 11:20 to play.  The Anchormen cruised to the win, leading the Huskies by as many as 34 points.

            The Huskies finished the game shooting 30.5 percent (18-for-59) from the field compared to the Anchormen who shot 46.8 percent (29-for-62) from the field, including an 8-for-18 effort from three-point range.

            Both teams are back in action on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).  Southern Maine hosts the University of Massachusetts Boston in its final regular season home game.  Rhode Island College hosts the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
