GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team scored a single goal in each of the first two periods and rookie goalie Jordan Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo.) stopped 10 shots as the Huskies shut out the Castleton State College Spartans, 2-0, in an ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Women's East game Friday evening at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the third in the last four games for the Huskies, and improved their record to 7-13-2 overall and 5-9-1 in the league. The Spartans dropped their seventh straight game to slide to 5-14-2 overall and 3-11-1 in league play.
Sophomore Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) provided the Huskies with the only goal they would need banging in her team-leading 12th marker of the season at 2:15 of the opening period. Junior Lauren Whiting (Hampton, N.H.) made a pass out of the right wing corner to the front of the net where Bubier managed to squeeze a shot past Castleton State sophomore goalie Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, Md.). That would be the only shot to get past Dembowski who had 14 saves in the opening 20 minutes.
The Huskies got an insurance goal at 13:34 of the second period as freshman Courtney White (Medford, Mass.) potted her sixth goal of the season. The power-play tally was set up by sophomore Alex Smith (Winthrop, Mass.) and rookie Erin Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.).
Lee stopped every shot she saw to post her second shutout of the campaign. Her best stop came in the second period when she made the save on a shot from the right wing circle off the stick of senior Laura Szwed (White Lake, Mich.).
Southern Maine finished the game with a 35-10 edge in shots on goal. Dembowski played the first two periods, registering 24 saves, before leaving the game after two periods with an injury. Senior Amanda Hoy (Brockport, N.Y.) had nine stops in the final period.
The Huskies play their final regular season home game on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting New England College. Castleton State travels to Plymouth State University on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
