WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior forward Mike Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) scored six of his game-high 21 points in overtime to lead the Colby College Mules to a 67-55 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Snapping a three-game losing streak, the win improved the Mules' overall record to 10-10. The Huskies fall to 9-11 with their sixth straight loss.
Russell recorded a double-double by also grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds, and finished the game shooting 7-for-17 from the field. Junior forward Kyle Donovan (Portland, Maine/Deering) added 14 points, while senior guard Christian Van Loenen (Falmouth, Maine/Cheverus) added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Junior guard Chris Pagentine (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) paced the Huskies with 16 points. Senior forward Otis Smith (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Ocoee) registered a double-double scoring 14 points and corralling 10 rebounds, and senior guard Devin Chambers (Memphis, Tenn./Oak Hill Academy) chipped in with 11 points.
With the score stalled at 53-53 for three minutes, Russell battled his way to an offensive rebound and a put back to put the Mules in front 55-53 with 31 seconds to play. The Huskies missed two chances at tying the game on their next possessions before Smith was fouled with just three seconds to play and canned both ends of a one-and-one to send the game into overtime.
It was all Colby in the overtime period, as the USM was unable to make a basket during the five-minute stretch. Led by Russell, Colby closed out the game with a 12-0 run.
Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference game. Colby College hosts Middlebury College on Friday (6:00 p.m.).
