Colby Blanks Southern Maine Again, 2-0

Box Score

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore goaltender Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) turned aside 34 shots to lead the Colby College Mules to a 2-0 shutout of the University of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday night in a non-conference game at the Alfond Rink.

The shutout was Wheeler's second over the Huskies this season, and helped lift the Mules record to 3-4-1.  Wheeler stopped 22 shots in the Mules' 3-0 win over the Huskies at USM on November 22.  The loss dropped the Huskies record to 3-4-1.

Senior Marissa Simmons (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) gave the Mules the only goal they would need converting on the power play for her first goal of the campaign at 15:19 of the first period.  Junior Ally Kane (Montpelier, Vt.) and sophomore Samantha Slotnick (Canterbury, Conn.) earned the assists.

Wheeler and USM rookie netminder Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) took over the game from that point keeping both sides scoreless until the final seconds.  Both goalies finished the game with 34 saves.

With Bergstrom off in favor of the extra attacker, junior Meredith Reynolds (Marion, Mass.) added an unassisted empty-net goal for Colby with three seconds remaining on the clock.

Both clubs will be off for semester exams and the holidays.  Southern Maine heads to Trinity College for a two-game series on January 1-2.  Colby will play in the Saint Michael's College Tournament on December 30-31.
