Box Score GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore goalkeeper Mikkail Crockwell (St. David's, Bermuda) recorded four saves to post the shutout as the Thomas College Terriers stopped the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon at breezy Hannaford Field.
The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Terriers, and improved their overall record to 5-4-0. The Huskies dropped their third straight match to slip to 2-9-0.
Crockwell came up with his best stop of the day in the 18th minute when he stuffed a shot attempt by USM rookie forward Mazen Aljari (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia). Crockwell came off his line to keep Aljari from getting a shot off 15 yards from goal. The second-year keeper also had two good saves in the second half on deflected, spinning shots.
The Terriers broke the scoreless deadlock in the 30th minute as sophomore Matt Ford (Mid Glamorgan, Wales) got down the left side and drove a low cross into the box. Rookie Khamisi Lightbourne (Sandy's, Bermuda) was streaking toward goal and redirected the ball into the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Thomas picked up an insurance marker in the 49th minute as freshman Mattias Schyberg (Ekero, Sweden) sent a wind-blown cross from the right side onto the foot of classmate Dakota Duplisse (Manchester, Maine), and Duplisse put a 10-yard shot past USM junior goalkeeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) for his second goal.
Turner made two stops in 85-plus minutes before giving way to rookie Alex Charette (Fort Kent, Maine). Charette did not record a save over the final four-plus minutes.
Southern Maine returns to the Hannaford Field pitch on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) hosting Plymouth State University for a Little East Conference match. Thomas will host Green Mountain College in a North Atlantic Conference match on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
