Eastern Connecticut Rolls by Southern Maine 6-0

            GORHAM, Maine -- Senior midfielder Sean Collins (Bristol, Conn.) came off the bench to score two goals and dished out an assist, and junior forward Matt Furman (Montville, Conn.) scored twice, as the visiting Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors rolled by the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 6-0, in a Little East Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Hannaford Field.

            With the victory, the Warriors clinched the LEC regular season title and will be the top seed in the upcoming conference championship tournament that starts November 2.  The Warriors improved to 11-4-1 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 6-0-0.  The Huskies dropped their third straight match to slip to 3-13-0 overall and 2-4-0 in conference play.

            Junior midfielder Carl Stensland (Storrs, Conn.) had a goal and picked up an assist on Collins' first goal for the Warriors.  Junior Cory Tobler (Portland, Conn.) scored the final goal of the match off an assist from Collins.

Senior goalkeeper Carl Appel (West Windsor, N.J.) earned his seventh clean sheet of the season making three saves.  The Warriors out shot the Huskies 15-5 during the match and earned nine corner kicks to one for the Huskies.

            Southern Maine rookie goalkeeper Alex Charette (Fort Kent, Maine) registered three stops before giving way to classmate Ian Dollen-Oliveto (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) with six minutes to play.  Dollen-Oliveto did not record a save.

            Stensland gave the Warriors the only goal they would need in the 14th minute getting the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, taking a touch and putting a shot inside the left post for his second goal of the season.  Collins took a feed from Stensland in the 37th minute and deposited the ball into the USM net.

            Collins and Furman scored less than a minute apart in the second half to push the lead to 4-0.  Collins cracked a 25-yard shot from the left side into the right side netting for his second goal of the day, and third of the season, in the 61st minute.  Furman scored less than a minute later collecting a loose ball in the middle and slipping a shot past Charette.

            Furman tallied his team-leading ninth goal in the 68th minute, and Tobler ran onto a pass from Collins in the 87th minute to put a shot past Dollen-Oliveto.  The goal was Tobler's fourth of the campaign.

            Prior to the start of the match, Southern Maine recognized its three seniors, back Jeff Soules (Scarborough, Maine) and midfielders Chris Kain (Kennebunk, Maine) and Derek Guimond (Portland, Maine/Deering), and held an official ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the opening of Hannaford Field.

            Southern Maine travels to Salem, Mass., on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) to play Salem State University.  Eastern Connecticut will play its next match at Becker College on Tuesday (6:00 p.m.)
