NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) scored twice as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team defeated the University of Southern Maine, 5-0, in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.

Junior defender Brady Paradis (Tiverton, R.I./Providence Country Day HS) gave the Corsairs a lead they never relinquished just 3:30 into the first half.  Paradis converted off a pass from freshman forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, Mass.), giving UMD a 1-0 lead.  Ten minutes later, Ferreira fired home his first goal of the game, off a pass from Gontijo. In the 36th minute, sophomore midfielder Kyle Duarte (New Bedford, Mass.) scored when his shot ricocheted off a Husky defender and into the upper corner of the goal, staking UMD to a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

With 39:07 to play in the second half, UMD freshman defender Jacinto Centeio (Boston, Mass./Madison Park HS) pushed the Corsairs advantage to 4-0 when he converted a pass from Duarte and beat Huskies freshman goalkeeper Alex Charette (Fort Kent, Maine). UMass Dartmouth's final goal came from Ferreira off a pass from Centeio in the 57th minute, securing the victory for the Corsairs.

The Corsairs outshot the Huskies, 26-4.  Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, Mass.) was credited with one save for UMD.  Charette made seven stops and freshman goalie Ian Dollen-Oliveto (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) stopped four shots for Southern Maine.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 9-4-1 and 3-1-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while Southern Maine dropped to 3-11-0 and 2-3-0. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Worcester State University Tuesday evening. The Huskies will visit Bates College on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
