UMass Boston Hands USM First LEC Loss, 3-0

Box Score

BOSTON -- Sophomore Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, Mass.) had a goal and an assist and the University of Massachusetts Boston defense held the University of Southern Maine to just three shots en route to a 3-0 Little East Conference match Saturday afternoon at a soggy Clark Athletic Field.

The win was the Beacons first in conference play after two losses, and improved their overall mark to 6-3-0.  The Huskies suffered their first loss in the conference after opening their LEC slate with two wins, and dipped to 2-8-0 overall.

Galouzis set up what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 15th minute when his pass from the end line was one-timed by junior Victor Hugh Costa (Malden, Mass.) inside the far post.  The goal was Costa's second of the campaign.  The Beacons held a 12-2 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to slip another shot past USM junior goalkeeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering).

The Beacons added a pair of insurance goals, seven minutes apart, midway through the second half.  Galouzis finished off a corner kick for his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Junior Luis Saquich (Marlborough, Mass.) played the corner to wide-open classmate Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam). Johnson drove the ball to Galouzis, who headed it home to make it 2-0.

Junior Brian Sanz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) closed the scoring in the 69th minute with a 25-yard shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.

UMB junior goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, Mass.) did not have to make a save to earn the shutout.  For Southern Maine, Turner played 76 minutes and totaled five saves.  Rookie Alex Charette (Fort Kent, Maine) closed out the match with three saves in 14 minutes of action.

Southern Maine will host Thomas College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) for non-conference match.  UMass Boston returns to action on Wednesday (8:00 p.m.) when they face Newbury College in a non-conference match to be played at Regis College in Wellesley.
