GORHAM, Maine -- Three players scored in double figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies routed the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs, 84-42, in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
The win was the second straight for the Huskies who improve to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the Little East Conference. The Corsairs fall to 3-9 and remain winless in the conference at 0-3.
Senior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine), sophomore forward Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) and freshman guard Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) each scored 11 points to lead the Huskies. DeMillo, who also had four assists and five steals, connected on a pair of three-pointers, moving her into a tie for third place in the career record book. McNamara added a game-high seven assists and had a pair of steals.
Freshman forward Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass.) led the Corsairs with 11 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Megan Sheehan (Carver, Mass.) tossed in eight points off the bench, while freshman guard Keneisha Debnam (Dorchester, Mass.) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Limiting the Corsairs to just one point, a free throw from freshman forward Mykaliah Best (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin), in the first eight minutes of the game, and just five points through the opening 15 minutes, the Huskies held a commanding 38-18 lead at the break. McNamara and DeMillo each scored eight points in the half for the Huskies who shot 45.5 percent (15-for-33).
The Huskies continued where they left off in the second half, opening with a 9-2 run to lead 47-20, with 17:25 to play. Three players scored the Huskies in the run, including four points from junior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland).
A three-pointer from Bornemann pulled the Corsairs to within 24 of the Huskies, 52-28, with 14:55 to play, but the Huskies scored eight straight points to nab a 60-28 lead with 12:40 to play. The Huskies, who shot a white-hot 62.1 percent (18-for-29) in the second half, continued to increase their lead the rest of the way, leading by as many as 44 points, en route to the win.
Southern Maine finished the game shooting a season-best 53.2 percent (33-for-62) from the field. The Corsairs were 15-for-57 from the field (26.3 percent) and were hampered by 23 turnovers.
Southern Maine hosts Rhode Island College on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.). UMass Dartmouth travels to Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).
