GORHAM, Maine -- Senior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) sank a three-pointer from the baseline as time expired to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 74-71 win over the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Tuesday night at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
DeMillo's second three-pointer of the game gave the Huskies their third straight win and improved their overall record to 8-6 and 3-1 in the Little East Conference. The loss halted a four-game winning streak for the Anchorwomen who fell to 10-3 and 2-2 in the conference.
Junior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland) recorded her team-leading eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Huskies. Sophomore forward Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) added a career-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while senior forward Becky Dixon (Gardiner, Maine) added nine points and six rebounds off the bench. DeMillo and freshman guard Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) each had eight points, and McNamara added six assists.
Junior forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, R.I.) led all scorers with 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to record her 10th double-double of the season. Sophomore forward Courtney Burns (Rockland, Mass.) added 15 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Stephanie Coro (N. Providence, R.I.) added 14 points. Junior guard Nicole Girard (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) chipped in with eight points and six assists.
With the teams exchanging blows in a closely contested game, Southern Maine dealt the knock out punch in the waning seconds of regulation to secure the win. Leading by one point at the half, the Huskies and Anchorwomen banged back and forth with the over the final 20 minutes of the game as the score was tied nine times, and neither team had more than a four-point advantage.
Southern Maine led by two, 69-67, with 46 seconds to play following one of two free throws from junior guard Renee Nicholas (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region). Riley knotted the score on the Anchorwomen's next possession with two free throws for the eighth tie score of the half, and 13th of the game.
On USM's ensuing possession, Cochran powered her way in the paint for a basket to put the Huskies up 71-69 with 24 seconds to play. Dixon blocked an RIC shot, but Burns secured the offensive rebound and scored to even the score at 71-71 with 14 seconds to play. Quickly bringing the ball up the court, McNamara found DeMillo coming off a screen for the game-winning shot.
Southern Maine finished the game shooting 49.2 percent (30-for-61) from the field and 50.0 percent (5-for-10) from the three-point line. Rhode Island College shot 44.8 percent (26-for-58) from the field and were an outstanding 94.4 percent (17-for-18) from the free throw line.
Southern Maine hosts Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game. Rhode Island College hosts Plymouth State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
