Worcester State Nips Southern Maine 3-2 in Overtime

WORCESTER, Mass.  –  Senior midfielder Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored the game winning goal in overtime to leads the Worcester State University Lancers to a 3-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Wednesday night in Worcester, Mass.

            With its second straight conference overtime win and fourth consecutive win overall, the Lancers improve to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the Little East.  Suffering its second overtime loss of the season, Southern Maine dips to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

            Rotondi netted the game winner in the 81st minute after freshman midfielder Lindsey McGeary (Foxboro, Mass.) stole a pass and fed Rotondi for an open look in from of the USM goal.

            The Lancers had led the Huskies 2-0 with 40 played in regulation, but the Huskies rallied to tie the score with two goals in the second half.  Sophomore forward Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine/Hebron Academy) had a hand in both USM goals.  Bubier scored USM's first goal of the game in the 53rd minute off of an assist from sophomore forward Rachel Trafton (Corinth, Maine/Central).  Bubier then fed freshman forward Ariel Kaplan (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) for the game-tying goal in the 57th minute forcing the overtime action.

            Despite outshooting the Lancers 17-12 and holding a 12-7 advantage in penalty corners, the Huskies were unable to take the victory on the road as Worcester State junior goalkeeper Kat Masterjohn (Warren, Mass./Quaboag) made 10 saves in the win.  USM freshman goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) made five saves in the loss.

            Southern Maine hosts Westfield State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).  Worcester State hosts Bridgewater State on Saturday (11:00 a.m.)
