Allen Leads Monks Past Southern Maine 4-1

GORHAM, Maine    –  Sophomore back Melanie Allen (Jackson, N.H./Kennett) scored a pair of goals to lead the St. Joseph's College Monks to a 4-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham, Maine.  The win was the first for the Monks in the 15-game series between the two schools.

            With their win, the Monks improve to 4-2 overall.  The Huskies drop their second straight game to fall to 3-6.

            Allen gave the Monks a 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game when she tapped in an assist from senior forward Kayla Nowell (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region).  Nowell spotted the Monks a 2-0 lead just two minutes later for her third goal of the season following an assist from senior midfielder Courtney Rague (Old Orchard Beach, Maine). 

            Southern Maine junior back Bethany Bougie (Sanford, Maine) notched her first goal of the season on in the 13th minute to bring her team to back within a goal at 2-1.  The score remain unchanged through the half.

            In the second half, St. Joseph's quickly regained its two-goal advantage when Allen knocked in her second goal of the game in the 38th minute.  The Monks' junior forward Sarah Bartell (Exeter, N.H.) tallied a late goal in the 65th minute for the 4-1 final.

            Monk junior goalkeeper Meaghan Johnson (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made four saves to earn the win.  USM freshman goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) allowed three goals and made two saves in 42:39 of playing time.  Senior goalkeeper Rachel Lolley (Gorham, Maine) allowed one goal and made two saves playing the final 27:21 of the contest.

            Southern Maine hosts Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).  St. Joseph's College travels to Husson University on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
