Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Junior forward Katie Herter (Topsfield, Mass./Brooks School) scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the No. 7 Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham, Maine.
With the win the nationally ranked Polar Bears remain undefeated at 4-0. The loss drops Southern Maine to 3-5 overall.
Bringing its high-powered offense that has averaged six goals per game, Bowdoin broke open a scoreless game in the first half netting two goals in a span of 31 seconds to secure the win. Herter notched Bowdoin's first goal of
the game slotting in an unassisted strike off of a rebound at the 16:17 mark. Bowdoin's second goal came on a solo blast from sophomore midfielder Kassey Matoin (Springvale, Maine/Sanford) 16:48 into the half.
The Huskies played solid defensively in the second half and were able to keep Bowdoin at bay until the final 20 seconds of regulation when Herter scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season off of an assist from senior midfielder Phoebe McCarthy (Glyndon, Md./Bryn Mawr).
Southern Maine freshman goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) played well in goal making nine saves on 13 shots on goal. Senior back Heather Gilman (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence) made one defensive save.
Bowdoin goalkeepers senior Emily Neilson (Chatham, Pa./Taft) and sophomore Kayla Lessard (Enfield, Conn./Deerfield Academy) split time evenly. Neither player recorded a save as Bowdoin held a distinct 20-1 advantage in shots.
Southern Maine hosts St. Joseph's College (Maine) on Thursday (4:00 p.m.). Bowdoin College travels to Middlebury College on Saturday (11:00 a.m.).
