WATERVILLE, Maine -- Freshman midfielder Casey Castle (Bermuda) scored a pair of goals to give the Thomas College Terriers a 2-1 win over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer match Tuesday afternoon.
The win was the second straight for the Terriers who improve to 3-2-2 overall. The Huskies slide to 1-6-0 overall.
Castle gave the home side a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute of play converting a pass from freshman Paul Rechichi (Australia).
Southern Maine got the equalizer in the 51st minute when senior Nick Johnson (South Portland, Maine) knocked home the rebound of a shot taken by senior Peter McHugh (Scarborough, Maine). The goal was the first of the season for Johnson.
Castle tallied the game winner in the 73rd minute off a set up from Keenen Hoedemaker (New Zealand). The two goals give Castle seven for the season, including all three game-winning markers.
Rookie goalkeeper Mikkail Crockwell (Bermuda) recorded two saves in the Thomas goal to earn his second win of the campaign. USM senior keeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) finished the game with eight saves. Thomas piled up a 14-7 advantage in shots while USM had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Southern Maine will travel to Plymouth State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match. Thomas travels to Castleton State College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) to open its North Atlantic Conference schedule.
