USM Downs UM Farmington For First Win; Fall to Husson

            WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) had 10 assists, eight service aces and four kills to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a dramatic, 3-2, come-from-behind victory over the University of Maine Farmington Beavers in the second day of the Colby College Invitational hosted by Colby at Wadsworth Gymnasium Saturday.

            The Huskies split their two matches during the second day of the invitational tournament.  The Huskies rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat UMF 3-2 (12-25, 11-25, 25-19, 25-14, 17-15).  Later in the day, the Huskies fell to the Husson University Eagles 3-1 (11-25, 25-11, 14-25, 17-25).  The win over UMaine Farmington marked the Huskies' first victory of the season.  With the split, Southern Maine is 1-7.  UMaine Farmington stands at 1-3 and Husson is 5-0.

            In the match with UMF, Shuttle led a balanced attack as the Huskies overcame a 2-0 deficit and were victorious in a closely contested fifth and deciding game.  Junior outside hitter Hallie Noah (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage) continued to provide the Huskies with a solid all-around effort, contributing three kills, eight assists, nine aces and four blocks.  Noah also delivered the game-winning point for the Huskies in the fifth game.

            Against Husson, the Huskies were even with the Eagles after the first two sets, but the Eagles were able to take the final two sets for the victory.

            Sophomore setter Aleta Johnson (Milton, N.H./Nute) orchestrated the Eagle victory with a match-high 29 assists.  Sophomore outside hitter Michelle Smith (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown) added 16 digs, five kills and five service aces.

            Shuttle again paced USM with eight kills and 10 assists, while Noah added three kills, five assists, three aces and three blocks.

            Southern Maine travels to UMaine Farmington on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match.
