BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College Polar Bears went 7-for-10 from the free throw line over the final two minutes of the game to extend a five-point lead and defeat a feisty University of Southern Maine team, 63-51, in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Morrell Gymnasium.
The win was the third straight for Bowdoin, and improved its record to 3-1 overall. The Huskies fall to 3-3.
Junior guard Jill Henrikson (Bath, Maine/Morse) and senior guard Katie Bergeron (Bradley, Maine/Old Town) each scored 18 points to lead three Polar Bears in double figures. Junior forward Alexa Barry (Rindge, N.H./Cushing Academy) added 12 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Southern Maine freshman guard Lauren Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine) led the Huskies with 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Junior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Wood-land) narrowly missed a double-double scoring nine points and hauling down a career-high 21 rebounds. Cochran's 21 rebounds tied the fourth highest single-game total in Southern Maine history. Junior guard Renee Nicholas (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) added seven points and four rebounds.
Trailing by 11, 50-39, with 6:40 to play, Southern Maine strung together a 10-2 run to pull to within three with 4:05 to play. Senior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) and Rousseau hit back-to-back threes for a quick six-point swing to trim the Polar Bear lead to five, 50-45. Barry grabbed an offensive rebound and made the follow up on the Polar Bears' next possession, before Cochran and Nicholas combined for the Huskies next four points.
Bergeron was able to draw a foul and quickly restored a five-point lead for the Polar Bears, 54-49, with 3:58 to play. The Huskies missed on their next three possessions, before Bergeron hit a tough jumper in the paint for a 56-49 advantage with 2:34 to play.
Nicholas made a driving layup on the Huskies' next trip down the court to cut the lead to 56-51 with 2:15 to play, but the Polar Bears were able to ice the game at the line making 7-of-10 from the charity stripe as the Huskies failed to convert offensively and were forced to foul.
Southern Maine travels to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) to open up its Little East Conference schedule. Bowdoin hosts Colby College in a non-conference game on Saturday (2:00 p.m.).
