WATERVILLE, Maine -- Rookie goalie Brianne Wheeler (Brussels, Ontario) earned her first career shutout Tuesday night turning aside 29 shots as Colby College defeated the University of Southern Maine, 1-0, in a non-league game at the Alfond Rink.
The win evens the Mules' overall record at 1-1-0. The Huskies, winless in their last five games (0-4-1), fall to 1-4-1. The two teams will meet again at USM on February 1.
In a battle of first-year goaltenders, Wheeler and USM keeper Jordan Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo.) both put on a show. Wheeler made 14 of her 29 saves in the third period as the Huskies pressed for the tying goal. Meanwhile, Lee had 42 saves, including 20 in the second period when Colby had a 21-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The only goal of the game came at 13:42 of the second period. Sophomore defenseman Ally Kane (Montpelier, Vt.) scored her first goal of the season, an unassisted power-play marker, to give the Mules the game's only tally.
Southern Maine is off for 10 days until December 3 when it hosts Salve Regina University for an ECAC Women's East game. Colby travels to NESCAC rival Middlebury College on Saturday (7:00 p.m.).
