GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Jessie Igoe (Lexington, Mass.) scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Bates College Bobcats to a 78-55 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.
The win was the second straight for the Bobcats who improved to 2-1. It was the Bobcats first win against the Huskies since November 23, 2004, and snapped a six-game losing streak against their in-state rivals. The loss halts the Huskies' two-game winning streak and levels their record at 2-2.
Sophomore center Brianna Hawkins (South Portland, Maine) added a career-high 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field to join Igoe in double figures. Senior forward Christine McCall (Lowell, Mass.) had nine points and collected10 rebounds.
Southern Maine junior Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland) led the Huskies with eight points and 10 rebounds. Freshmen guards Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) and Lauren Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine) each scored eight points.
Leading 34-26 at the half, Bates shot an outstanding 57.1 percent from the field (16-for-28) and outscored the Huskies 44-29 in the second stanza to run away with the victory. While shooting a respectable 43.1 percent from the field (22-for-51), the Huskies' offense suffered from 26 turnovers.
The Bobcats dominated the boards, outrebounding the smaller Huskies 48-32, including a 22-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
Southern Maine hosts St. Joseph's College (Maine) on Sunday (5:30 p.m.). Bates College travels to Husson University on Monday (7:00 p.m.).
