USM Defeats Husson 77-67

            GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, Maine/Woodland) scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds – both career-high totals – to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 77-67 win over the Husson University Eagles in the final game of the USM Tip Off Classic Saturday afternoon at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.

            The win is the second straight for the Huskies who improve to 2-1.  The loss is the second straight for the Eagles who drop to 0-2.  In the other game, Salve Regina University remained unbeaten by defeating the University of Maine Farmington 58-48.  USM and Salve Regina both went 2-0 for the event.

            Cochran was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.  Sophomore guard Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) also was selected to the all-tournament team.  Husson junior forward Brianna Hanscom (Mattawamkeag, Maine/Mattanawcook), UMF senior forward Jillian Ross (Belfast, Maine) and Salve Regina guards, sophomore Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I./Scituate) and senior Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.), rounded out the all-tournament team.

            Cochran's 20 points and 11 rebounds marked the 6-foot-1 forward's first career double-double and led three USM players in double figures.  Jordan added 13 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots, while senior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, Maine) added 12 points.  Freshman guard Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) had eight points, five assists and four steals.

            Hanscom led the Eagles with 18 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals.  Senior guard Noelle Lincoln (Dixmont, Maine/Nokomis) added 10 points.

            Struggling offensively in the first half, the Huskies trailed the Eagles midway through the opening stanza, before taking a two-point 21-19 lead on a layup from junior guard Kim Rivet (Sebago, Maine/Lake Region) with 10:49 to play.  The teams battled back and forth with USM maintaining a slim lead before taking a seven-point lead, 42-35, into the break on a last second three-pointer from DeMillo. 

            In the second half, USM maintained its lead until Jordan's three-pointer with 12:40 to play gave the Huskies their largest lead 58-48.  Jordan's three ignited a 15-2 run for the Huskies resulting in a 70-50 lead with 7:40 to play.  Cochran and Jordan each had five points in the run.

            Southern Maine led 75-55 with 5:56 to play before the Eagles closed out the game on a 12-2 run for the 77-67 final. 

            Southern Maine finished the game shooting 49.1 percent (28-for-57) from the field and 31.8 percent (7-for-22) from the three-point line.  Husson shot 37.3 (19-for-51) from the field. 

            Southern Maine travels to Bates College on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).  Husson returns to action on November 29 (7:00 p.m.) hosting Bates.
