GORHAM, Maine -- Junior guard Mike Poulin (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) and senior guard Cortez Isaac (Germantown, Md./Northwest) have been named co-captains of the 2010 University of Southern Maine Huskies men's basketball team. Veteran head coach Karl Henrikson made the announcement as the Huskies prepare for their season-opening contest against the University of New England Nor'easters tonight (7:30 p.m.).
Poulin is in his second term as co-captain for the Huskies after serving as one of the team's leaders as a sophomore despite missing the entire season with an injury. Isaac has been named co-captain for the first time. "Mike and Cortez provide us valuable leadership on the court. They are both savvy players who exemplify the will to win," noted Henrikson.
As a freshman, Poulin provided Southern Maine with valuable minutes at the point guard spot, sliding into a starting role midway through the season. In his first year with the Huskies, Poulin averaged 4.9 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game. He recorded a career high of eight assists against Eastern Connecticut State University.
Isaac is the Huskies top returning scorer from last season. A well-rounded and versatile player, Isaac averaged 25.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists from the small forward position, while shooting a solid 47.2 (133-282) from the field. A gifted scorer, Isaac recorded a career-high 41 points in a 99-92 overtime win against Johnson State College.
The Huskies, picked to finish sixth in the Little East Conference preseason coaches poll, return 10 players from last season's squad. Among the returnees joining Poulin and Isaac on the court for the Huskies are senior forward Otis Smith (Ocee, Fla./Altamonte Springs) and senior guard Luke Pollock (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood). Smith averaged 13.6 points and 6.4 rebounds as a junior, while Pollock chipped in at 7.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.
