Eastern Connecticut Sweeps Southern Maine 3-0

           WILLAMANTIC, Conn. -- The Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors earned a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference play Saturday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium.  The Warriors defeated the Huskies, 25-7, 25-15 and 25-22 in the teams' regular-season finale.

            The win stopped a three-match losing streak for the Warriors who finished the season 13-15 overall and 1-6 in the Little East.  The Huskies concluded the campaign at 6-23 overall and 0-7 in LEC play.  The two teams failed to qualify for the six-team, single-elimination Little East Conference tournament that begins on Tuesday.

            Senior Rachael Joy (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and junior Julie Forler (Hartland, Conn.) led a balanced Eastern Connecticut effort with six kills each.  Senior Christina Schirone (Pelham, N.Y.) had five kills and five service aces.  Junior Gianna Trombino (East Moriches, N.Y.) had 22 assists, a team-high 12 digs and contributed four of the Warriors' season-high total of 18 aces. Joy also had ten digs, and senior libero Alyssa Ruta (Holbrook, N.Y.) and sophomore Danielle Bourne (Branford, Conn.) each added seven digs.

            Senior setter Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) led the Huskies.  Netland had 12 assists, three digs and one solo block.  Shuttle had a team-high seven kills and five digs.  Junior Kayla Cotsis (Biddeford, Maine) and freshman Meghan Rumore (Manchester, N.H.) each had five digs.
