CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine volleyball team twice rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Pine Manor College, 3-2, Thursday night in a non-conference women's volleyball match.
Southern Maine dropped the opening set, 25-22, before getting level with a 26-24 win in the second set. Pine Manor again went ahead by taking the third set 25-23. USM rallied to convincingly win the fourth set, 25-12, before taking a nail-biter in the decisive fifth set, 15-13.
The win was the third straight for the Huskies, and improves their overall record to 6-18. It is the first time that the Huskies have won three consecutive matches since they opened the 2006 season with three straight wins. The Gators dropped their sixth consecutive match to slide to 6-12 overall.
Senior Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) led the Huskies dishing off 29 assists and serving up five aces. Senior Sharon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) had a fine all-around match with 11 kills, six service aces, 11 digs and two blocks.
Freshman Meghan Rumore (Manchester, N.H./West) had a team-high 12 kills and eight digs, and sophomore Molly McOsker (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) contributed 11 kills and five digs for the Huskies.
Southern Maine travels to Providence, R.I., on Saturday (12:00 p.m./2:00 p.m.) to play Worcester State University and Rhode Island College. Pine Manor will participate in a tri-match at Suffolk University on against Suffolk and Mount Ida College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
